Detection of total fumonisins produced by Fusarium verticillioides (Sacc) isolates from maize kernels in Ethiopia

چکیده

Fusarium verticillioides is the most common fungal pathogen of maize in Ethiopia. Many strains this produce fumonisin myotoxins that are harmful to human and animal health. This study was conducted determine fumonisin-producing ability isolates F. isolated from kernels collected different maize- growing areas country. Eighty were grown on autoclaved cultures for one month, content quantified using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). All 80 evaluated able detectable levels total fumonisins culture with values ranging 0.25 38.01 mg toxin per kg material (fungal biomass kernels). The mean produced by not significantly (p>0.05) among areas, however, obtained same area as well agroecological zones wide-ranging. results indicate majority (57.5%) associated grains Ethiopia >4 mg/kg, while 35% <2 mg/kg. widespread occurrence higher across all maize-growing indicates a possible food safety risk. Thus, efforts should be made prevent spread fungus good agronomic practices implore ways avoid contamination both field storage.

Fumonisins, Mycotoxins Produced by Fusarium

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi that are harmful to both animals and humans. Mycotoxicoses are diseases caused by the ingestion of foods or feeds made toxic by these fungal metabolites. Mycotoxins undoubtedly have presented a hazard to human and animal health for decades, and this threat only can become more important as the demand on the available food supply increases with the i...

Effect of sorting on incidence and occurrence of fumonisins and Fusarium verticillioides on maize from Nigeria.

Fumonisin mycotoxins are commonly found on maize and pose a health risk to humans and domesticated animals. Visible sorting of grain has been suggested as a simple technique that can be used to reduce exposure to fumonisins. We collected maize samples in 2003 from different farms in the Kaduna state of Nigeria (Northern Guinea Savanna agroecological zone) that had been sorted by farmers as eith...

Control of Fusarium verticillioides (Sacc.) Nirenberg and Fumonisins by Using a Combination of Crop Protection Products and Fertilization

Fusarium verticillioides is the most common fungal pathogen associated with maize ear rot in Tanzania. In a two-year trial, we investigated the efficacy of crop protection (insecticide and/or fungicide) and fertilizer (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) treatments in reducing the occurrence of F. verticillioides and its mycotoxins in maize grown in Tanzania. Seasonal differences were seen to have a su...

Infection and Fumonisin Production by Fusarium verticillioides in Developing Maize Kernels.

ABSTRACT Fusarium ear rot and fumonisin contamination are serious problems for maize growers, particularly in the southeastern United States. The lack of maize genotypes highly resistant to infection by Fusarium verticillioides or to fumonisin contamination emphasizes the need for management strategies to prevent contamination by this mycotoxin. Information on the initial appearance of infectio...
